Entering Term Grades
Before a report card can be generated, each teacher records the term grade for every student in their classes. This page explains that entry process so administrators understand it and can support their teachers. It is different from day-to-day gradebook scoring.
Required Access
Assessment Admin — Edit
Default roles: School Admin, Principal, Curriculum Coordinator
Teachers can always enter grades for their own classes. Administrators with Assessment Admin access can open and enter grades for any teacher’s classes on their behalf.
Two Places Grades Come From
Section titled “Two Places Grades Come From”Mosaic keeps two separate surfaces, and it helps to know the difference:
- The GradeBook — where teachers score individual assignments throughout the term and Mosaic calculates a running average. See the GradeBooks feature overview.
- Report Card / Progress Report entry — where the single term mark that prints on the report is recorded. This is what this page covers.
The two are connected: when it is time to finalize grades, a teacher can pull the gradebook average straight into the report card grid rather than retyping it.
Opening the Entry Screen
Section titled “Opening the Entry Screen”- From the Assessment section, open the teacher landing page (Grades Teacher).
- Choose Report Card Entry or Progress Report Entry for the current term.
- This opens the teacher’s entry home, which groups their work into Academic Classes, Conduct Classes, and Homeroom Students. Each row shows the period, class, number of students, and how many are complete. A row turns green when every student has been entered.
- Click a class to open its entry grid.
Entering Grades for a Class
Section titled “Entering Grades for a Class”The class entry grid lists every student. The exact columns depend on the components enabled in the grade report template, and may include:
- Grade — the overall academic mark.
- Effort and Conduct — each on its assigned grade scale.
- Skill columns — one per skill the template defines.
- Comment — a written comment for the student.
- Exam — the semester exam mark, if semester exams are enabled.
Enter a mark by typing either a percentage (0–100) or a grade-scale code, depending on how that scale is configured. A legend on the screen reminds you which is expected.
Copy from GradeBook
Section titled “Copy from GradeBook”Rather than typing every mark, click Copy from Gradebook while editing. Mosaic fills the Grade column with each student’s calculated gradebook average, which the teacher can then adjust before saving.
Adding Comments
Section titled “Adding Comments”Click the comment icon on a student’s row to open the Select Comment picker. It lists the school’s preset comments in the family’s report language, so comments are consistent and translated. Teachers can also type a custom comment where the template allows it, within the minimum and maximum length set on the template.
Homeroom Narratives
Section titled “Homeroom Narratives”If the template enables a homeroom teacher narrative, the homeroom teacher writes a personalized narrative for each of their students in addition to class grades. Narratives then flow through an administrator review process — see Monitoring Grade Entry — where they can be reviewed and translated before the report card is generated.
Finishing Up
Section titled “Finishing Up”Grades save automatically as they are entered. A class is considered complete when every required field for every student is filled in — at which point its row turns green on the entry home and on the administrator’s monitoring list. Encourage teachers to confirm every class shows as complete before the reporting deadline.
